NYC’s Fifth Avenue to make way for more pedestrians, less cars

NEW YORK CITY (PIX11) — The heart of New York City’s luxury shopping is about to get even bigger with a new investment.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced full funding to transform Fifth Avenue into a bigger pedestrian walkway from Bryant Park to Central Park, making way for more shoppers and less traffic.

“Fifth Avenue is a bustling boulevard of shopping, restaurants, businesses, and tourism, with more people walking down the street every hour than fill Madison Square Garden during a sold-out Knicks game,” said Adams during the announcement on Wednesday.

The plan would make sidewalks almost 50% wider, shorten crosswalks, reduce traffic lanes from five to three, and add more greenery and lighting. Construction work will begin with making upgrades to sewer systems and water mains underground before moving to work above ground…
