New rules proposed for basement, backyard apartments in NYC

NEW YORK (PIX11) – Tiny homes are a step closer to becoming a reality in New York City.

The skyline won’t change, but 80,000 units of housing could be created and almost hidden in plain sight. The city revealed what accessory dwelling units, or ADUs, would look like in its push to build more affordable housing.

The ADUs would either be a standalone tiny home of around 800 square feet or an attached new apartment, basement, or attic space. They’re designed for lots with existing one- or two-family homes only, potentially built with low or no interest loans.

With the city struggling with an affordable housing crisis, ADUs would be the most significant zoning changes since the 1960s. There has been pushback from opponents, who said it can ruin the character of a neighborhood and could be dangerous, considering 11 New Yorkers died from Hurricane Ida after getting trapped in basement apartments…
