78-Year-Old Man Slashed on 9th Avenue in Afternoon Attack

A 78-year-old man was slashed in the neck on 9th Avenue, between W48th and W49th Streets in Hell’s Kitchen on Sunday afternoon, police said.

According to the NYPD, the incident happened at approximately 2:51pm and the victim was taken by EMS to Bellevue Hospital in stable condition.

An eyewitness, who gave his name to W42ST as Jack, was sitting outside Mom’s Kitchen and Bar next door. He said the altercation began moments after the attacker allegedly grabbed a table knife from one of the utensil baskets at Mom’s and slipped it into his pocket. “As he turned around and walked back down the street, he called the old guy a slur,” Jack said. “The old guy threw a punch, and then there was a scuffle. That’s when the guy pulled the knife out of his pocket and stabbed him. He ran away, then came back to grab his shoe or something, and ran off south on 9th Avenue.”

Conor, a worker at Mom’s, said it was unlike anything he’d witnessed in the neighborhood before. “That’s the first time I’ve ever seen that, to be honest. I’ve never seen anyone stabbed in this area like that — that was crazy,” he said. “Luckily, one of my guys was outside and was able to keep the guy away, because he ran back and then ended up running away again. Then all the police came.”…
