Free flood kits distributed to Brooklyn residents

CONEY ISLAND, Brooklyn (PIX11) — The New York City Department of Environmental Protection held a Flood Preparedness Town Hall on Wednesday in Coney Island to educate the public about the causes of flooding and to distribute free flood preparedness kits.

Henry Polansky said the city’s recurring heavy rainstorms often wreak havoc on his Sea Gate home, flooding it so badly that almost everything inside is destroyed.

“I have a gate valve,” said Polansky. “If I don’t shut off the gate valve, it floods. Like three, four, five inches, and it ruins everything. It’s a big, big mess.”

He added, “I had carpeting. I had to take away the carpeting, and I had to put regular tiles, and I lost a lot of furniture, so now I’m very careful.”…
