US Secret Service thwarts telecommunications plot in New York

NEW YORK (PIX11) — The U.S. Secret Service has destroyed “tens of thousands” of electronic devices that were used for telecommunications threats in New York and throughout the tristate area, the department announced on Tuesday.

The devices were primarily used to make anonymous phone threats towards senior U.S. government officials, according to the Secret Service.

Officials said the devices also had the potential to disable cell phone towers, shut down cellphone networks in New York City, as well as facilitate anonymous, encrypted communication between potential threat actors and criminal enterprises.

The investigation led to the discovery of more than 300 SIM servers and 100,000 SIM cards across multiple sites…
