Newark celebrates Hispanic Heritage Month Friday amid immigration tensions

Just over 35% of Newark’s 300,000-plus residents identify as Hispanic, a far greater share than in surrounding Essex County or New Jersey, both at about 22%, according to the non-profit DataUSA.

To acknowledge the courage, resilience and importance of the city’s second-most populous racial or ethnic group, particularly in light of the ongoing immigration crackdown, the city will hold its annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration on Friday with a day-long event at Symphony Hall.
