Crime on New York City’s subway system has significantly decreased, with a 24% drop in major crimes reported in November compared to the same month last year. This decline includes a reduction in grand larcenies, which make up the majority of subway crimes. Over the past 11 months, major crimes in the subway system have decreased by 5.5% compared to the same period in 2024.
According to NYPD data, November 2025 was the safest November on record for the subway system, excluding pandemic years when ridership was low. The decline in subway crime is part of a broader trend in New York City, where overall major crime has been decreasing for eight consecutive quarters.
NYPD Deputy Chief of Transit Keith Shine highlighted the reductions in robberies, felony assaults, and grand larcenies as key contributors to the overall decline in subway crime.
