Hoboken’s Oldest Sushi Spot, Ubu, Closes After 30 Years

Another longtime Hoboken staple has quietly exited the scene. As the Mile Square continues to see a steady shuffle of openings and closures, Ubu, located at 205 Hudson Street, appears to have closed its doors after years in the neighborhood. Read on for what to know about Ubu’s closure in Hoboken, New Jersey.

On February 18th, 2026, The Hoboken Girl reported on the relocation of longtime staple Lo Fatt Chow. Following that post, a reader commented to share that Ubu had also closed its doors in recent weeks. After looking into it further, Ubu is now listed as permanently closed on Google.

The reader who tipped off our team shared, “Ubu was a hidden gem — a BYOB with fresh food and reasonable prices — and Jay, along with his team, was amazing.” After more than three decades at 205 Hudson Street, it seems Hoboken has said goodbye to yet another longtime neighborhood gem.

More About Ubu

Ubu was a traditional Korean and Japanese restaurant, often noted as the “oldest sushi place in town.” Since its 1996 opening, it served as a low-key, go-to spot for locals craving a casual dinner, a quick sushi pickup, or a laid-back BYOB night with friends. The menu primarily consisted of specialty sushi rolls, bowl specials, and a variety of ramen, soups, and salads. Appetizers included tofu, gyoza, shrimp tempura, spicy tataki, seared salmon sushi, and harumaki, among other favorites that kept regulars coming back.

In recent weeks, Subway has announced plans to open at 205 Hudson Street, just steps from Ubu’s former storefront. With Ubu now closed, it is another shift in the neighborhood’s ever-evolving lineup, as familiar local spots say goodbye and national chains continue to pop up around town…
