NEWARK, N.J. — The Gateway Development Commission has approved a change to the project stabilizing the ground for the Hudson River Tunnel Project that will remove submerged wooden piles in the area of Pier 68, reducing the possibility that tunnel boring machines will encounter obstructions.
The Hudson River Ground Stabilization Project will now include the removal of approximately 500 wood piles remaining from the demolition of the pier, at a cost of approximately $88 million. Work is expected to begin late this year.
Pier 68, built in the late 1800s to handle freight traffic for the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad, was damaged by a fire in 1964. It was subsequently demolished, but many of its support piles remain in the riverbed…
