New Jersey environmental justice advocates and elected officials are applauding a $125 million settlement announced by the U.S. Department of Justice to help clean up of the Diamond Alkali Superfund site along the Passaic River.
“We welcome this news,” Alejandra Torres, assistant director of advocacy and organizing at the Newark-based Ironbound Community Corporation, said on Tuesday. “It’s an exciting step in the right direction.”
The settlement is with a Texas company known as Environmental Resource Holdings LLC, or ERH, and will fund construction of processing and support facilities enabling the dredging of a 17-mile stretch of the Passaic River, which runs from the Dundee Dam in Garfield to Newark Bay…
