N.J. hot dog legend suddenly closes, seized by state over unpaid taxes

The white and orange striped facade has been attached to the storefront at Tommy’s Italian Sausage & Hot Dogs in Elizabeth for decades.

A painting of the shop’s revered potatoes in a cup has been there for years as well, along with a neon sign proclaiming the stand serves the “world’s greatest chili hot dogs.”

But the neon wasn’t glowing Wednesday morning. Next to it was new white and orange signage — two pieces of paper explaining why the 57-year-old hot dog joint was closed.

Tommy’s, home of one of New Jersey’s most beloved hot dogs, has been shuttered by the state over unpaid taxes, according to signs on the storefront…
