Bobby Hurley III hired to Saint Peter’s staff as Hurley family returns to Jersey City

Another member of the Hurley family is kickstarting his basketball coaching career in Jersey City.

Bobby Hurley III, the son of Bobby Hurley and nephew of UConn men’s basketball coach Dan Hurley, was announced Wednesday as the next Director of Basketball Operations at Saint Peter’s University in New Jersey. After playing four seasons under his father at Arizona State, Hurley spent the 2025-26 campaign as Director of Analytics and Strategy for the Sun Devils before moving east.

While the Hurley coaching dynasty is recognized across the country, Saint Peter’s head coach Bashir Mason possesses particular insight into the hard-nosed family, having worked as an assistant under Dan Hurley at Wagner for two seasons. Mason took over as head coach of the Staten Island program in 2012, forming the first branch of Dan Hurley’s coaching tree, and moved on to Saint Peter’s a decade later.

Saint Peter’s is located just a couple miles north of the Greenville neighborhood, where Dan and Bobby Hurley grew up into basketball royalty — their father, Bob Sr., coached Jersey City parochial powerhouse St. Anthony, where he lifted 26 state titles and became one of 10 coaches to win 1,000 high school basketball games. He coached more than 150 players to Division I programs, including Dan, who spent five years at nearby Seton Hall, and Bobby, a star at Duke and an eventual first-round NBA Draft pick…
