Queens fire kills 57-year-old man, minorly injures 3 firefighters

NEW YORK (1010 WINS/WCBS 880) — A fatal Queens fire early Saturday morning took the life of a 57-year-old man, and three firefighters were minorly injured while trying to quell the blaze, officials said.

The two-alarm fire broke out at an apartment building located at 133-12 113rd St., near 133rd Avenue in South Ozone Park, just before 12:30 a.m.

Citizen App footage from the scene shows large orange flames and heavy gray smoke funneling out of the back of the two and a half story building, which was surrounded by a large FDNY presence. At one point, officials can be seen removing a person from the building on a stretcher.

Roger Assman was rescued by fire officials after being critically injured in the blaze, and was transported by EMS to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center where he succumbed to his injuries.

Three firefighters sustained minor injuries combating the fire, the nature of which were not immediately known.

The blaze was under control by 1:56 a.m., and an initial investigation showed that the fire, which consumed the first and second floor, broke out in the victim’s kitchen.
