Game Analysis: Washington/Rutgers

Play of the Game/Turning Point – Vincent Holmes’ illegal-substitution penalty. Washington trailed Rutgers late in the first half 7-3. With time winding down, the Husky defense held the Scarlet Knights’ offense on 3rd-and-5 from their own 20, so head coach Greg Schiano sent on his placekicker, Jai Patel, to attempt a 37-yard field goal. Lance Holtzclaw broke though and blocked the attempt and Maurice Heims recovered it on the Husky 21. It looked as if the Huskies would escape and trail by just four points heading into the lock room. However, unbeknownst to most, the referees had thrown a flag because redshirt freshman DB Vincent Holmes had inadvertently run on the field before the play had been blown dead. The flag resulted in an illegal-substitution penalty and gave Rutgers the ball at the Husky 15 with a little over 30 seconds remaining. On the next play, QB Athan Kaliakmanis threw the ball to Ian Strong for a 15-yard touchdown over Elijah Jackson, putting the hosts up 14-3 heading into halftime.
