ICE ups security at N.J. detention center as ‘nice old ladies’ protest nearby

The contrast between ICE officers in camouflage fatigues and the “nice old ladies” protesting outside the immigrant detention center might have been comic if not for the guns and plastic wrist cuffs the officers carried and the violent confrontation between Newark Police and other demonstrators the night before.

“What are we, ‘Nice old ladies’?” Susan Vercheak, 74, a member of the South Orange-Maple Action civic group, asked the half-dozen women with her just off the Delaney Hall detention center property on Tuesday.
