Staten Island FDNY hero who once carried unconscious man to safety dies at 44

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Gregory “Mickey” Hansen was still a civilian when he ran up lower Manhattan’s West Side on Sept. 11, moments after the planes hit the World Trade Center, in search of his sister and assisting others.

His sister, Becky Hansen, survived. And in early 2002, her brother followed in the footsteps of their father, retired FDNY Capt. Greg Hansen, a 28-year veteran of the department.

Joining the ranks of the FDNY was the start of a 20-year career that would see the younger Hansen promoted to lieutenant in 2019…
