A 33-year-old Montclair man charged in connection with a July 11 gas station shooting that injured a bystander turned himself in to authorities after detectives used security footage to link him to the crime, police said.
The man, Marquis Staton, turned himself into Montclair police on Tuesday evening, July 15, after detectives formally charged earlier in the day, police said in a news release. The shooting happened during a “large fight,” which unfolded at the Shell Gas Station, 115 Bloomfield Ave., at 11:24 p.m. on July 11, police said.
The woman, who suffered a gunshot wound to her leg, told officers she was in the parking lot of the gas station when two men began fighting, according to police. She told officers that she was not involved in the fight, she heard the gunshot and immediately felt pain in her leg.
A Samaritan rushed the woman to the hospital Mountainside Medical Center in Montclair, police said. The victim – whom police did not identify – was later moved to Hackensack University Medical Center in Hackensack, according to police.
