This high school teacher is fighting to bring the ‘missing pages’ of Black history to N.J. classrooms

Muhammad Ptah Akinyele believes children should learn about Black history to get a fuller picture of American history.

The Weequahic High School history teacher Bashir is eager to learn how to better educate students when he participates in this year’s Amistad Summer Institute, a weeklong program from Aug. 4-7 dedicated to transforming how African and African American history is taught in New Jersey schools.

The institute, which is rooted in New Jersey’s landmark Amistad Law (A1301), brings together educators from across the state to deepen their understanding of Black history and equip them with tools to incorporate it meaningfully into their classrooms…
