Resident Chases Suspect in Car Theft Attempt, Montclair Cops Make Arrest

A man accused of attempting a vehicle theft in Montclair’s Third Ward Tuesday evening faces burglary and robbery charges after a resident chased the suspect, who in turn threatened to shoot his pursuer, police said.

A resident told officers responding to Porter Place on a report of a motor vehicle theft in progress at about 6:33 p.m. that another resident was chasing the suspect on foot, going south on Harrison Avenue, police Lt. Terence Turner said.

The resident who pursued the suspect – later identified as 24-year-old Quasim Rooks, of Newark – provided officers a description of Rooks, who was last seen around Harrison Avenue, Gates Avenue, Cross Street and Orange Road, according to Turner.

“The victim advised officers that the suspect was seen inside of their 2025 Hyundai SUV,” Turner stated. “When confronted, he fled on foot. In addition, the suspect reportedly stated, ‘If you don’t stop following me, I’m going to shoot you.’ ”…
