Newark, NJ: A violent confrontation inside a Newark police station turned fatal late Tuesday night when officers shot and killed a man armed with a knife after he allegedly launched an attack within the station house.
Chaos Inside the Station House
According to preliminary reports, the incident unfolded shortly before midnight when the man entered the precinct and began brandishing a large knife. Witnesses described the suspect as agitated and yelling incoherently as he moved through the lobby and attempted to advance toward duty officers.
Police officials said the man ignored multiple verbal commands to drop his weapon. One officer was reportedly injured during the scuffle before backup rushed in to contain the threat.
Officers Forced to Open Fire
Faced with the escalating threat, officers discharged their firearms, striking the suspect multiple times. Emergency medical personnel were called immediately and attempted to render aid on the scene. The man was later pronounced dead after being transported to a nearby hospital.
Authorities confirmed no civilians inside the station were harmed, though one officer suffered minor injuries and is recovering.
Investigation Underway
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office has launched a full investigation into the shooting. Officials will review body-worn camera footage, officer testimonies, and surveillance within the station to determine the chain of events.
