The City of Newark has mobilized its nonprofit food providers in a coordinated response to reduced and delayed SNAP benefits to 37,000 residents who rely on the federal nutrition program, including 29,000 children.
The city has set up food “hubs” in each of the city’s five wards, and an emergency assistance website, NwkAssist.com, allowing residents to apply for up to $600 in emergency assistance to offset the loss or delay of SNAP funds.
SNAP, which stands for Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, provides funding to families earning up to 185% of the federal poverty level, or $4,290 a month for a family of four in New Jersey, whose benefits would total about $680 a month…
