Mamdani stays flexible on how to get universal childcare done

NEW YORK (PIX11) — Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani is moving full steam ahead with his plan for universal childcare– but how long it will take and how it will be paid for is less certain.

Thursday, Mamdani visited a childcare center in East Flatbush, which currently serves 3K and pre-K students under contract with the City of New York. The center, like others, has the capacity to expand its services to include care for babies and toddlers — a key element of Mamdani’s universal childcare plan.

“We still have people walking in our doors asking for those age-group classrooms,” said the education director at Friends of Crown Heights.

Mamdani’s visit underscored his commitment to expanding childcare options in the city, which he said should be available to children as young as six weeks old. He emphasized that his administration would approach the rollout of universal childcare in phases, leaving open the possibility that it could take a number of years before the program is fully operational citywide…
