Montclair Council Backs NJ Bill to Limit Cops Cooperation with ICE

Montclair has joined a growing chorus of towns formally urging New Jersey to approve a law that would limit state and local law enforcement’s cooperation with federal immigration authorities.

The Immigrant Trust Act would make law a state directive that limits state and local law enforcement’s assistance to federal immigration agents. The measure would also block federal immigration enforcement action at “sensitive locations” such as churches, schools and healthcare facilities. And it would prohibit local police from sharing personal data with federal immigration agents outside of pressing circumstances.

The town council approved its support of the Immigrant Trust Act in a 6-0 vote on Nov. 12. The council asks the Legislature to move “with all deliberate speed” to pass the bill…
