After 19 years, Newark mayor’s brother arrested on probation violation charge from 2006

In November 2004, Obalaji Baraka was sentenced to a year of probation for a third-degree aggravated assault conviction in a domestic violence incident, according to the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office.

“In 2006, he was sentenced [for] violation of probation for the third-degree aggravated assault charge. He was arrested yesterday for that 2006 violation,” a spokesperson for the prosecutor’s office, Carmen Martin, told NJ Advance Media in an email on Friday.

The time it took to make the arrest is just one noteworthy element of the case. The other is that Obalaji Baraka is the brother of Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka, who hired Obalaji Baraka to a city job in 2015 and who has been an outspoken advocate for victims of domestic violence…
