Parents, Staff Complain of Icy Sidewalks and No Heat After School Year’s First Snowstorm

Some Jersey City Public Schools (JCPS) students and staff who arrived at their schools on Monday — following a Sunday morning storm that dropped 3.5 inches of snow — were greeted by slick sidewalks and frigid school buildings, JCPS parents and employees told the Jersey City Times. District employees said JCPS did not equip them with the manpower or salt necessary to properly clear the schools’ grounds, claims Superintendent Norma Fernandez denied.

Parents and staff members, some of whom provided photos to the Times, said the sidewalks and stairs leading to some schools were treacherously icy and did not appear to have been adequately shoveled or salted. Stakeholders who spoke to the Times or took to social media to complain about the conditions mentioned at least a dozen JCPS schools, including the Christa McAuliffe School (P.S. 28), Henry Snyder High School, the James F. Murray School (P.S. 38), Franklin L. Williams Middle School (M.S. 7), Ezra L. Nolan Middle School (M.S. 40), and others.
