Congress reps tour Delaney Hall in ‘oversight’ visit after inmate death

NEWARK, N.J. (PIX11) — The death of a man in custody inside Newark’s Delaney Hall detention center has prompted an oversight visit from members of Congress.

“It’s unfortunate and incredibly tragic that the reason we have to be here today is because someone has now died in custody,” said Katy Sastre, Executive Director of First Friends of New Jersey and New York.

According to ICE, 41-year-old Jean Brutus was taken into their custody on Dec. 11, showing no signs of distress during intake, and without a medical history of cardiovascular problems. Then, they say Brutus experienced a medical emergency and local EMS was called.

He was pronounced dead at University Hospital the next day…
