Newark school board urged to ‘ditch’ food vendor contracted by ICE detention center

Immigrants’ rights advocates are urging the Newark Board of Education not to renew millions of dollars in contracts with Driscoll Foods, a company that provides meals to thousands of public school children and to adults being held in the city at the Delaney Hall immigrant detention center.

Groups including Eyes On ICE and the Democratic Socialists of America have joined a “Ditch Driscoll Foods” campaign on Instagram and plan to hold a demonstration at the school board’s regular meeting on Thursday at 6:30 p.m., at McKinley Elementary School on Colonnade Place.

“Our concern is about the board of education understanding that their money is going towards supporting a company that is profiting from immigrant detention that is hurting families of students at Newark public schools,” said Mary Rizzo, a member of the democratic socialist group who plans to address the board on the issue…
