Officer who fatally shot Newark man ranked near top of department in use of force

The Newark police officer who fatally shot 42-year-old Wali Bey on Jan. 19 had been involved in 25 use-of-force incidents — not including the shooting —since he joined the department in June 2022, tying him for 13th among the department’s 1,000 officers in total incidents, according to data the state began compiling in 2020.

Most of those force incidents by the officer, Nashid Reynolds, involved the use of pressure points — gripping or applying pressure to pain-sensitive areas — punches, or takedowns, though no shootings, according to the New Jersey Department of Law & Public Safety’s use-of-force dashboard.
