Details released for newest Target store coming to Essex County

Target announced an opening date for its long-awaited location in West Orange, which will bring new life to a shopping plaza’s lynchpin retail space left dormant for six years after the closure of a massive two-story Kmart.

The retail giant’s 55th location in New Jersey will open on March 15 in the West Orange Plaza shopping center, according to an announcement issued by Target on Jan. 29. The new store will command 150,000 square feet of retail space, including a CVS Pharmacy, Starbucks cafe and Target’s in-house optometrist office, Target Optical, the company stated.

With 150,000 square feet of retail space to fill, this new store could bring a much-needed flood of customers to the ailing strip mall. West Orange Plaza’s centerpiece has been an eyesore since its former tenant, a two-story Kmart, shuttered in 2020.
