On Sunday, Feb. 15, at approximately 2:24 a.m., North Arlington police officers conducting radar enforcement on Belleville Turnpike observed a white 2016 Dodge Challenger traveling eastbound at 56 mph in a posted 30 mph zone, North Arlington Police Lt. David Hudak said. Officers initiated a motor vehicle stop shortly thereafter.
During the investigation, the driver, Tanajah Harris, a 25-year-old Newark resident, was determined to be intoxicated and was subsequently placed under arrest, Hudak said. Officers searched the vehicle’s passenger compartment for open containers of alcohol and recovered a partially consumed 1.5-liter bottle of wine, according to Hudak. During the search, officers also recovered a Glock 19 Gen 5 handgun containing a live round in the chamber, the lietenant said.
Through further investigation at the scene, officers recovered a 16-round ammunition magazine from the front passenger, Raequawn Bridgeman, a 35-year-old East Orange resident, Hudak said. A records check confirmed the firearm was registered to Bridgeman; however, the handgun was not being transported in compliance with New Jersey law, according to police. Under state law, firearms must be unloaded and contained in a closed and securely fastened case, gun box, or locked in the trunk of the vehicle, police said.
