Trash Fire Prompts Evacuation of Six-Story Building in Montclair Sunday (UPDATE)

A fire in the trash compacter room at the Valley and Bloom apartments in Montclair prompted the evacuation of the six-story building Sunday night and left one firefighter injured, authorities said.

Crews contained the two-alarm fire at 36 Valley Road to the trash compactor room, according to Capt. John Fierro, the acting battalion chief on the scene. The call came in at 8:04 p.m.

“The sprinkler system malfunctioned in the trash room,” Fierro said. “The surrounding sprinkler heads were flowing water.”…
