Former N.J. assemblyman, 56, dies in Newark crash

A former state assemblyman was killed in a two-car crash in Newark Sunday morning, officials said.

Albert Coutinho, 56, from Newark’s Ironbound neighborhood, died following a crash at McCarter Highway and South Street. Police were called to the scene around 7:29 a.m., the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Coutinho went into cardiac arrest at the scene and was taken to University Hospital in Newark, where he was pronounced dead around 8 a.m. The driver of the other vehicle was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, the prosecutor’s office said…
