Faith Leaders, Congregants Walk 10 Miles to Newark ICE Facility in Good Friday Pilgrimage

An ecumenical group of clergy and parishioners from churches across northern New Jersey marked Good Friday with a 10-mile pilgrimage to Delaney Hall, a federal immigration detention center in Newark.

More than 100 participants began the walk at 8 a.m. April 3 at First Congregational Church in Montclair, stopping at several houses of worship along the way, including Christ Episcopal Church in Glen Ridge and the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, where they were met by Cardinal Joseph Tobin. The group continued to St. Stephan’s Grace Community in Newark before arriving at Delaney Hall around 5 p.m.

Organizers said 155 people joined the final two-mile stretch from St. Stephan’s to the detention facility, where they were met by additional supporters. The day concluded with a brief prayer service outside the facility, including a reading of the names of individuals who have died in immigration detention…
