Bayonne’s 2nd Ward council race going to runoff, 2nd place finisher too close to call

The Bayonne 2nd Ward City Council race is heading to a June 9th runoff after none of the four candidates were able to secure over 50 percent of the vote, with the battle for second place poised to be a photo finish.

Bayonne Board of Education Trustee Melissa Godesky-Rodriguez, who ran on now Mayor-elect Sharon Ashe-Nadrowski’s ticket – which had three fellow first ballot winners – won the first round of the 2nd Ward race by a big margin.

With 93.75 percent of the vote counted, Godesky-Rodriguez leads Omar Elgarhi, who ran independently, by just under 16 points: 1,272 votes to 790, according to preliminary tallies from the Hudson County Clerk’s Office.

However, third place finisher Sal Gullace, a former 2nd Ward councilman, is right in the mix with 776 votes. Planning Board Chair Karen Fiermonte, who ran with mayoral candidate Mary Jane Desmond, came in a distant fourth place with 168 votes…
