NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Shakia Bailey has filed a lawsuit against the Newport News Sheriff’s Office and jail staff, claiming they did not help her son, 21-year-old Jaqaris Jemison, who later committed suicide while being held in the Newport News City Jail.
Jemison was found dead in his cell June 17, 2025. His mother claims she warned jail staff about his situation 20 minutes before his death.
A $20 million lawsuit has now been filed in hopes of getting answers…
