Fort Monroe hosting African Landing Commemoration Week

HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) – African Landing Commemoration Week begins Saturday, Aug. 22, at Fort Monroe, marking the 1619 arrival of the first recorded Africans in English North America.

The commemorative events will run through Aug. 29 at the site of the African Landing Memorial at Point Comfort.

‘We remember them’: African Landing Memorial officially unveiled at Fort Monroe

More than 400 years ago, the first recorded Africans in English North America landed on the shores of Point Comfort, which is now Fort Monroe. Taken from present-day Angola and surviving the Middle Passage, they were enslaved upon arrival in the colony.
