HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — A new sculpture was unveiled at the African Landing Memorial during the National Ceremony of Remembrance and Renewal in Fort Monroe.
The ceremony honors the site where the first recorded Africans were brought to North America in 1619. It was part of African Landing Commemoration Week, an annual observance at Fort Monroe centered on remembrance, history, culture and community. This year’s ceremony also served as a signature event of Virginia’s commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the nation.
