EDEN, N.C. (WGHP) — A man has been sentenced in the murder of a Piedmont Triad doctor in an incident of domestic violence.
According to police, officers were called to Freedom Park regarding a shooting “in progress” before 3 p.m. on July 30, 2023. Officers arrived on scene within a minute of dispatch.
At the scene, officers found Dr. Gwendolyn Lavonne Riddick, 40, of Eden, beside her car with “numerous” gunshot wounds. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.
Police found John Michael Powell, then 35, of Newport News, Virginia, as he was driving away from the park. He was arrested and charged with first-degree murder…
