NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The man charged with murdering his eight-month-old daughter and the child’s mother had his own mother accompany him for one of several interviews with detectives, according to testimony Wednesday, as the jury saw that interview and got a preview of the path of data that police used to track the mother’s car and cell phone.
Keir and Chloe Johnson went missing April 30, 2017. They were never seen again. Carlos Johnson, Jr. is charged with their murders.

In a February 2018 interview with two police detectives, Carlos Johnson had his own mother sitting next to him. He was reluctant to provide information, even though by that point his own daughter was missing and presumed dead. Johnson was already at police headquarters to retrieve his phone that was part of the investigation.
“I don’t have time for this,” Johnson told the two detectives interviewing him. “I want to get my phone and leave.”

Johnson’s own mother was seated next to him. “Tell them what you know,” she told her son. She said she didn’t even know about her granddaughter until the child and her mother were missing. One detective said to Carlos Johnson: “You gave that baby life. Keir and Chloe have fallen off the face of the earth.” The detective then said, “we’re not going to stop [looking for leads]. More people see the picture of Keir and Chloe every day.” By then, a picture of mother and daughter was widespread on a reward notice offering $25,000.The interview ended with the mother of Carlos Johnson, whose infant granddaughter had been unaccounted for after 10 months, saying “this is weighing on my heart every day.”…
