Deadly crash involving bicycle and SUV in York Co.

YORK COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — Virginia State Police said a man who was riding a bicycle is dead after being hit by an SUV.

It happened just before 8:30 p.m. Monday at intersection of Route 17 and Washington Square Drive in York County. The driver of a Ford Expedition had the green light and was unable to avoid hitting the bicyclist, police said.

The bicyclist, Leroy F. Chatham Jr., 60, of Yorktown, was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center where he later died from his injuries. According to police, he was dressed in dark, non-reflective clothing.

Police said the driver of the Expedition, James Clark, 53, of Newport News, Va., remained on scene of the crash.

Neither speed or alcohol were contributing factors in the crash, according to police.

The crash remains under investigation.
