Cruise Line Cancels All Visits to Historic U.S. Port Town

Princess Cruises has decided to scrap its plans to dock at a U.S. port of call this summer.

A news release confirmed that the cruise line cancelled plans to stop in Yorktown, Virginia. Three planned visits to the port of call brought criticism and controversy since the itinerary was first revealed last summer.

The historic town, known for its role in the American Revolution, rallied against the cruise line’s proposed itineraries, citing concerns about environmental impact and overcrowding.

The controversy began when Princess announced its 2,200-passenger cruise ship, Island Princess, would make three stops in Yorktown during the summer of 2024.

While the cruise line touted the economic benefits and cultural exchange opportunities, residents voiced their disapproval.

A grassroots organization, Preserve Yorktown, spearheaded the opposition, garnering over 7,000 signatures in a petition against the visits.

Concerns ranged from potential damage to the fragile ecosystem of the York River to the strain on infrastructure and the historical integrity of the town.
