George Washington’s original rye recipe is deemed the official drink of Virginia

Washington was more than a president.

Tempo has revealed its results for the most iconic drink in each state that they believe everyone should try. In Virginia, George Washington’s Rye Whiskey is the winner. This, however, does not indicate that most Virginians who partake of spirit have chosen the first president’s liquor.

Washington’s brew is, however, considered the official drink in the Commonwealth. This unaged rye is made in a reconstructed 18th-century distillery on Washington’s Mount Vernon estate grounds.

The exact recipe is used today.

The recipe for this unaged rye, which is still used today, comprises 60% rye, 35% corn, and 5% barley. The grain for this whiskey is processed by a water-powered gristmill constructed under George Washington’s instruction. Currently, there is no non-alcoholic version of the president’s brew.
