VSP: Dislodged manhole cover cause of MMMBT vehicle crash

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – Police said a dislodged manhole cover was the cause of the Thursday morning two-vehicle crash at the Monitor Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel (MMMBT).

According to the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) both southbound lanes at the MMMBT were closed due to the crash. As of 9:40 a.m., traffic backups are approximately 2 miles.

Traffic cam shows VDOT vehicles blocking off the lanes in the tunnel.

Virginia State Police said the crash occurred due to manhole cover that dislodged. Injuries were reported in the crash, but police did not say how many were injured or the extent of the injuries.

VDOT workers are currently working to replace the manhole cover.
