Commonwealth’s Attorney explains legal process behind indictment in Richneck shooting

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Newport News Commonwealth’s Attorney Howard Gwynn is reminding citizens of the special grand jury process that resulted in criminal charges against a former Richneck Elementary School assistant principal.

Ebony Parker is charged with eight counts of child neglect following the Jan. 6, 2023, incident where first-grade teacher Abby Zwerner was shot and injured by her 6-year-old student.

Parker was due in court Wednesday afternoon for a pre-trial hearing, with a two-day jury trial scheduled for next week. Parker briefly appeared and a status hearing is set for Friday to set a new trial date because Zwerner had surgery earlier this month and was unable to attend court…
