Hampton City Council meets to discuss ‘poverty landscape’

HAMPTON, Va. — Hampton is at a 13% poverty level, the fourth-highest in Hampton Roads behind Portsmouth, Norfolk, and Newport News, the Department of Economic Empowerment and Family Resilience (EEFR) presented to City Council on Wednesday. The findings came from a study looking to identify the best practices to combat poverty and promote economic mobility in the city.

The median household income in Hampton, based off of a 2019-2023 census, is $67,758, which is also almost a thousand dollars more than its neighboring city of Newport News.

Other studies from the U.S Census Bureau found a correlation between poverty and the increase of crime rates.
