York County Fire Chief steps down after 50 years of service

YORK CO., Va. (WAVY) – York County Fire Chief Stephen P. Kopczynski has officially retired from the Department of Fire and Life Safety after serving for over 50 years in the department, 36.5 years as chief.

Kopczynski began his career as a firefighter in 1974, before becoming fire chief in 1988. According to the department, Kopczynski has developed many programs to prevent emergencies as well as improve the health, safety, and wellness of department personnel.

He was also key in establishing a fire and rescue command school, now known as the Hampton Roads Fire Officer Academy, as well as the Peninsula Regional Live Fire Training Facility…
