Newport News man sentenced to more than 8 years for 2023 shooting

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A Newport News man was sentenced Thursday to more than eight years in prison after a 2023 neighborhood shooting, the Department of Justice announced.

Jimmy Lee Scott, 33, was sentenced to eight years and one month for two counts of being a felon in possession of a firearm.

According to court records, Newport News police responded on Nov. 5, 2023, to reports of a man brandishing a firearm. When officers arrived, Scott was firing a handgun, damaging multiple vehicles before fleeing. Police arrested him in a nearby backyard after a short pursuit…
