James City County Road Rage Shooter Sentenced to Two Life Terms After Incident at Centerville Road and Monticello Avenue

On October 23, 2025, Joseph Adams, 45, of Surry, was sentenced in Williamsburg-James City County Circuit Court. He received two consecutive life sentences and an additional 19 years. The sentence follows his conviction for a road rage shooting on October 5, 2024, at Centerville Road and Monticello Avenue in James City County, Virginia. Adams is being held at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.

The incident occurred around 3 p.m. Adams, driving a red Toyota Solara, fired several shots into another vehicle with three people inside as it turned onto Monticello Avenue. Two people were injured. An adult female was airlifted to VCU Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. A juvenile was taken to Riverside Regional Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. The third occupant was not hurt. The victims’ vehicle stopped at Monticello Avenue and Greensprings Plantation Drive, where first responders provided medical care.

Adams left the scene after the shooting. Police found his vehicle on the Jamestown-Scotland Ferry heading to Surry County. The ferry was held at the dock, and Adams was arrested by the Surry County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities believe Adams was under the influence of alcohol at the time…
