New I-64 East Traffic Pattern at J. Clyde Morris Boulevard Begins, Reducing Lanes for Newport News Drivers

Motorists on I-64 east in Newport News will see a traffic shift at J. Clyde Morris Boulevard (exit 258) starting as early as the night of October 22, 2025, depending on weather and schedule. This change begins the third and final phase of bridge rehabilitation at this location. The work is part of the Hampton Roads Express Lanes (HREL) Newport News Segment project.

With the new traffic pattern, vehicles will use the inside lanes over the bridge. The number of travel lanes will be reduced from four to three for most of this section. The current traffic split on I-64 east at J. Clyde Morris Boulevard will end. To make this change, the I-64 east on-ramp from southbound J. Clyde Morris Boulevard will close overnight from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. A signed detour will be available.

This inside-lane setup is expected to last through late 2025. A similar shift on I-64 westbound near J. Clyde Morris Boulevard began in early October. These changes are the last in a series of long-term lane closures and traffic shifts on I-64 in this area…
