Haunted Hampton Roads: Bacon’s Castle

Note: All this week, 10 On Your Side is spotlighting different haunted locations in Hampton Roads. In this episode, we visit Bacon’s Castle in Surry County.

SURRY COUNTY, Va. (WAVY) — Bacon’s Castle was called a castle because, at the time, it was about 14 times the size of what was considered a normal house. But that just means there’s more room for the spirits to roam around.

Haunted Hampton Roads: Surf and Rescue Museum

The castle was built in Surry County in 1665 for the Allen family. An addition was built in 1854 —and you can see the variation in the brick color on the right-hand side. It’s called Bacon’s Castle for Nathaniel Bacon, who led a rebellion in 1676.

“Nathaniel Bacon was a young English aristocrat who led this armed uprising of colonists here in this Tidewater region,” said Bacon’s Castle Education Manager Brenna Geraghty. “And it’s about six months long. They were rebelling against policies enacted by the colonial governments.”…
